About this Resource

I’m really excited to be sharing a new, free resource with you: The Adventure Canvas.

Ok, so it’s not technically new as I’ve been using this in my teaching for years but I did redesign it to a) make it look a whole lot prettier and b) make it easier for you to run with this in your hybrid/virtual PE lessons!

The Adventure Canvas is a guided reflection activity that I put together to help students map out the adventure of their dreams. The document is composed of a series of prompts that will invite students to reflect on:

🏔 Their choice of adventure
❤️ Why that adventure is meaningful to them
📍 Their adventure’s location
☀️ The expected weather and terrain
👕 Their dress plan for their adventure
✈️ Their adventure travel plan
⚠️ Potential risks involved
⛑ Safety precautions
🧠 New knowledge and skills that may serve
🔍 Useful research links

I’m a big believer in the power of manifesting our dreams into reality. The idea with the Adventure Canvas is that, by thinking through all of the various details it presents, we can get one step closer to living the adventure of our dreams.

Now, from an assessment perspective, I actually used this tool to help assess my students’ ability to make informed decisions on how to dress for physical activity based on the weather, terrain, and type of activity as well as their ability to safely participate in physical activity by identifying possible risks involved in the activity and planning accordingly. These two learning targets were the result of the grappling I did with the following SHAPE America Grade-Level Outcome:

Makes appropriate decisions based on the weather, level of difficulty due to conditions or ability to ensure safety of self and others. (S2.M13.6)

If you’re interested in trying this out with your students, I’ve done a few things to try and make that easier for you!

First off, the Adventure Canvas is available as a Google Classroom-ready Google Slides document. Just use the “Make A Copy” link provided in the download’s README file and you’ll be good to go. Also, I made a printer-friendly (i.e. less colourful) PDF version of the document should you wish to use this in a physical form with your on-campus students.

Second, I made a tutorial video to walk students through how to complete the Adventure Canvas activity. The video is on my YouTube channel (🎉 thanks for subscribing!) but it is also available from within both version of the document itself:

🔗 In the Google Slides version, students can access the video using the provided link that is in the Speakers Notes.

📷 In the PDF version, students can access the video by scanning the QR code in the top right corner of the first page.

Here’s a link to the video so that you can see it for yourself!

Finally, the last thing I did to make this easy for you to use with your students is to make it free to download! I hope your students enjoy completing their Adventure Canvas reflections as much as mine have!

🥳 Happy Teaching!
