About this Resource

In 2016, I had the opportunity to attend the Elementary Physical Education Workshop at CalPoly in beautiful San Luis Obispo, California. While at the workshop, a quote was shared that really stuck with me: “the game is never as important as the people you play with”. Since hearing that line, I have made it a part of my teaching. During our introductory unit in which we discuss the importance – and value – of being responsible, respectful and grateful in physical education, my students and I explored just how important this quote can be during times in which we find ourselves excited, nervous, engaged or enraged during games. We talk about how, no matter what, no game is worth hurting someone’s feeling, sense of self, or friendship over. Since the quote has become such a big part of my students’ day-to-day, I decided to make a poster to have it displayed at all times. I hope it serves you well and that your students enjoy as much as mine!

I’d like to say a special thank you to Mr. Pat Vickroy who I mistakingly believed to be the original source of this quote. After I reached out to him for his permission to use it, Pat took the time to explain to me that the quote is not his (even though many people think it is) and pointed me in the right direction of the quote’s source. It was a true class act move. Pat also shared with me how he uses the quote in his teaching. Reading over his approach with his students, I couldn’t help but be amazed how two teachers from two different parts of the world (along with the young people they teach) could be connected through the power of words.

Although I never managed to contact Debra Demaline Maxted, I would like to thank her for sharing such beautiful words with the world. Debra, if ever you see this, please get in touch! I have a poster with your name on it (literally)!
