How I Teach: Dylan Blain
by Joey Feith
The more I teach, the more I realize how lucky I am to be a part of the #physed community. Every day, I find myself being inspired and wowed by this group of amazing teachers from around the world. That’s why I’ve decided to take a second each week and highlight one of these incredible educators. This week’s post is from a great PE teacher from Wales, UK:
Name: Dylan Blain
Where Are You From: South West Wales, UK
Where Do You Teach: Dyffryn Tâf School
One word that best describes how you teach: Innovative
What apps/tools/resources can’t you live without?
I’m often described as being surgically attached to my iPad so I’ll have to go with that & the great apps I use regularly including Socrative, Coach’s Eye, Dartfish Easytag. Sportscode Gamebreaker is a powerful performance analysis tool that enables detailed analysis to be undertaken. Having a class set of iPods & iPads gives my students the opportunity to benefit from the great apps out there.
Using these with Apple TV means any iPad can be mirrored on screen or all. Google Drive provides a great platform for creating, collaborating and sharing documents with other staff & students.
Edmodo is a great educational social network for online work with my students.
Finally I have to mention Twitter which has enabled me to develop a great professional network whom are a constant source of information, ideas and discussion: #pegeeks
What do your #physed classes look like?
In my lessons I try to provide students with opportunities to develop their physical attributes alongside wider, social skills that will be important in the future. Given this I look to get students working independently, creatively and collaboratively. So I use lots of group work with a problem solving approach meaning students have to think, discuss and develop ideas whilst they work physically e.g coming up with some new health & fitness activities. Where it adds to and aids the learning experience I’ll integrate technology such as hand held devices and the many great apps available.
What’s the most unique thing about your teaching?
I try to integrate technology to enhance the learning and learning experiences of my students. As a department we have also re-developed our old style school gym into a health & fitness centre. Within this environment we have devised a health, fitness and well-being programme which is gamified to provide a motivating and rewarding functional fitness programme for all. I feel this is pretty unique, however I’m always inspired by the ideas I see from others on this space and elsewhere
What’s the best teaching advice you’ve ever received?
“Try to let all students develop physically, mentally & socially in an enjoyable environment”
Where can people find you online?
