Creating A Digital Physical Literacy Mural

As I mention in the video, the Digital Physical Literacy Mural was based on the #MaxYourDays mural that I set up when I taught at St. George’s School. The mural project was created to:

• Help educate the school community on the role of physical literacy in our lives.

• Showcase that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to physical literacy as it is a journey that it unique to each individual.

• Advocate for my physical education program, its purpose, and our approach.

To start building your Digital Physical Literacy Mural, follow these steps:

Add The Digital Physical Literacy Mural Template To Google Drive

You can download the Digital Physical Literacy Mural template for free from the Shop. Just hit the blue button below to jump to the page, add it to your cart, and proceed with your download.

Once you’ve download the resource to your computer, open the README file in the download. Use the “Make a copy” link provided in that file to add the Google Slides template to your Google Drive.

Build Your Photo Submission Google Form

The first thing you’ll want to do is to build the Google Form that families will be able to use to submit photos for the mural.

The form should include:

  • A header image (I’ve prepped one for you and included it in the template download).
  • A welcome message (I’ve also prepped and included this in the template download should you need it).
  • “Name” field
  • “Activity” field
  • “Activity Location” field
  • “Activity Description” optional field.
  • “Photo Upload” file upload field.

Once the form is all done, make sure your sharing settings are correct and then copy the “Send” link.

Add The “Add A Photo” Link In Your Template

Now that your Google Form is prepped and that you have copied the “Send” link that will direct families to it, it’s time to add that link to your Digital Physical Literacy Mural template.

Go to the Virtual #MaxYourDays Mural Google Slides file and do the following:

  • On Slide 2, right-click the transparent shape over the “Add A Photo” button.
  • Click “Link”
  • Paste the link to the photo submission Google Form that you created.
  • Repeat this process for the “Add A Photo” buttons on Slides 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 & 9.

Start Adding Photos To Your Digital Mural

The template is built to scale over time. Here are the steps to adding a photo to the mural:

  • Determine if the photo is best presented in Landscape or Portrait mode.
  • For a Landscape photo, copy/paste the “Landscape Photo Details” slide (Slide 5 at launch) underneath the latest “Mural Slide” (Slide 3 at launch).
  • For a Portrait photo, copy/paste the “Portrait Photo Details” slide (Slide 6 at launch) underneath the latest “Mural Slide” (Slide 3 at launch).
  • Once the “Photo Details” slide has been copy/pasted, right-click the photo placeholder graphic (the grey square with the photo icon). Select “Replace Image” and then “Drive”. Locate/select the photo you wish to upload and then double click it to insert it into the media placeholder.
  • Once the photo is inserted, copy/paste the “Name”, “Activity”, “Location”, and “Comments” information from the Google Form’s response into the appropriate placeholders on the “Photo Details” slide.
  • Go to the “Mural Slide”. Right-click a “Photo Square” placeholder and repeat the process to upload the photo here as well. Edit the photo’s mask if needed to centre it within the placeholder (if need be).
  • Finally, click the photo in the mural that you just uploaded. You’ll need to create an image link out of it to have families jump to its “Photo Details” page when they click on it. Doing this is simple: with the photo selected, hit CONTROL+K (Windows) or COMMAND+K (macOS) to pull up the hyperlink pop-up. From there, click “Slides in this presentation” and select the slide number that corresponds to that photo’s “Photo Details” slide. Finally, hit “Apply” and you’re done!

Add Additional Mural Pages

As I mentioned, this project is meant to grow over time. After a while, you may need to add additional “Mural Slide” slides to accommodate additional entries. I prepped a “Mural Slide” template slide to make this super easy for you!

  • Copy the “Mural Slides” template slide (Slide 9 at launch)
  • Paste it under the most recent, active “Mural Slide”.
  • All of the links will update accordingly, you don’t need to redo them all.

Sharing With Your Community

To share the virtual mural with your school’s community, you’ll want to send it to them in “Preview” mode.

  • Go to the Mural’s “Share” settings and make sure that the “Get Link” settings are set to “Anyone With The Link Can View”
  • Copy the Google Slide’s URL.
  • Remove the part at the end that starts with “edit”
  • Type “preview” in its place. 
  • Copy this new URL. If it was me, I would make a custom bit.ly or tinyurl link that would be easy to remember (e.g. bit.ly/yourschool)
  • Share this URL with your school’s community!
