The Team #PhysEd Wellness Club: November Yoga Challenge
by Joey Feith
I woke up yesterday feeling dangerous.
And by “dangerous“, I mean I woke up feeling old.
Here’s the thing: I ain’t no spring chicken no more. Despite my best efforts to take care of my body, the reality is that I’m staying sore longer than I used to and I’m hearing cracking sounds coming from me that I never noticed before.
All of this got me thinking: “I should do some yoga“. I know that I feel my best when I commit to my yoga practice and that most of my ailments can (mostly) be tied back to flexibility issues.
Here’s what else I know: I’m a pro at starting things and not finishing them. I just get distracted too easily. It’s a curse.
That’s what got me thinking “I should find an accountability partner“. I do well in settings where I’m held accountable and I love connecting with other people as we work towards similar goals.
That line of thought led me to think “we should start a wellness club for the #physed community as a way to promote teacher wellness, strengthen connections, and add protective factors that contribute directly to teacher resilience.”
Did I mention I get distracted easily?
Anywho, here’s what I’ve cooked up:
The Team #PhysEd Wellness Club is a way to promote a “health comes first” mentality, help teachers expand their social and professional networks, and have some fun along the way.
Each month, we’ll choose a health-based challenge that is based on maintaining a 30-day wellness streak.
🧘 This month, we’ll be focusing on developing a yoga practice.
Here’s how it works:
The challenge runs from November 1st to 30th 2021.
Each day, try to complete 10+ minutes of yoga. This can live in any format that fits your lifestyle: self-led, video-based, or as part of a class.
If you’re interested in being assigned an accountability partner, you can sign up for one using the following Google Form. I will do my absolute best to pair you with someone who has similar experience and is in the same time zone as you!
As you complete your sessions, keep track of them in whatever system works best for you (e.g. on your calendar, on a streak sheet, or in your preferred habit-tracking app). Although not mandatory, you can also share your progress using the #PhysEdWC hashtag on Twitter (Team #PhysEd Wellness Club… not PhysEd Bathrooms. Finding an available hashtag ain’t getting easier, folks!)
Each Sunday, I’ll post a “Weekly Wins” tweet that will prompt everyone participating in the challenge to share their wins, learnings, and progress.
That’s it! If you’d like to be a part of this, then just join the party! If you’re looking for an accountability partner, be sure to fill out the Google Form before Friday, October 29th 2021.
See you on the mat!
