Musical Hoops

Musical Hoops is a fun game for physical education in which students get to explore a variety of fundamental movement skills. With balancing acts along the way, this game is guaranteed to bring out some giggles!

Learning Targets

I can move my body in a variety of ways.
I know what running, hopping, skipping, and jumping are.
I understand the difference between running and sprinting.

Game Overview

Play Area

An open playing area with hoops scattered across the floor, roughly one per player. Students begin in a scattered formation.

Goal

When the music stops, get to the nearest hoop and hold a balanced position inside it.

Play
  • The teacher sets up the playing area by placing hoops on the floor, roughly one per player.
  • Students start in a scattered formation.
  • On the teacher's command, usually when the music starts, students move about the playing area while avoiding the hoops.
  • On the teacher's second command, when the music stops, students race to the hoop closest to them and stand inside it in a balanced position, such as on one foot.
  • On the next command, students continue moving about the playing area.

Equipment

  • Playing area with gym floor lines
  • Hoops
  • Music

Safety

Students should keep their eyes up to avoid contact with other students.

Movement Skills

The teacher may request that students move using certain movement skills only, such as skipping, hopping, or galloping.

This gives students an opportunity to practise a range of skills within the same game.

Discussion Questions

  • Which movement skill was easiest to stop quickly from?
  • How did you have to change your body to skip instead of run?

Melting Hoops

While students are moving about the playing area, the teacher removes some hoops from the game.

On the teacher's command, students race to the hoop closest to them and balance. However, since there are now fewer hoops than players, students must find a way to balance while sharing their hoop with other players.

Discussion Questions

  • How did you and your partners work out how to share a hoop?
  • What made balancing harder when there were more people in your hoop?
