The teacher divides the class into six teams. Each team starts in a line behind their workshop hoop (i.e. home base).
Each team has all of the equipment from their Builder’s List:
Working in relay fashion, each team attempts to build a snowman on the opposite side of the field (players may only carry one piece of equipment at a time.)
The first team to complete their snowman wins the round of Snowman Blitz!
Build One: Builder’s List
In build one of the game, the teacher divides the class into six teams. Each team is assigned a colour and a home base which will be known as their workshop base.
Once the teams are divided, each team lines up behind their workshop base. The teacher then places 36 cones in the playing area.
Under each cone, the teacher places a Builder’s List Item Card. The Builder’s List Item Cards are available as a free download on ThePhysicalEducator.com. Here is the download link. Personally, I like to laminate my cards so that they don’t get destroyed, but also so that we can play this game in the snow!
Once all of the item cards have been hidden under the cones, the teacher gives the signal to start.
Working in relay fashion, each team attempts to find all of the item cards of their team’s colour as quickly as possible. If a running player checks under a cone and does not find a card of their team’s colour, they place the cone back and run back to their workshop hoop to tag the next player in line. If a player does find an item cards of their team’s colour, they do the same thing except that they get to bring the card back to their workshop hoop!
You can set a time limit for this round, or play until one team has successfully found all of their item cards, or until every team has collected all of their cards.
Build Two: Build Prep
At the start of build two, each team will have an opportunity to go over their Builder’s List now that they have collected all of the cards. As teams do this, the teacher will scatter all of the equipment that is needed to build the six snowmen into the playing area.
On the teacher’s signal, teams will continue to work in relay fashion to attempt to gather all of the materials on their builder’s list. A running player may only gather one piece of equipment at a time and must collect equipment of their team’s colour (unless the teacher says differently… we don’t all have colour-coordinated equipment!)
Play continues until each team has collected all of their equipment.
Build Three: Snowman Blitz
In build three, now that each team has their Builder’s List and all of their materials, it’s time to build some snowmen!
The teacher will mark an area at the opposite side of the playing area which will be designated as the construction zone.
Continuing to work in relay fashion, each team must attempt to build their snowman inside the construction zone. Just as in the previous build, a running player may only carry one piece of equipment at a time.
Play ends once each team has built their snowman. Teams are then invited to go check out all of the snowmen that have been built and are invited to give compliments on other teams’ work!
Student should be careful when running through the playing area when all of the materials are scattered.
Students should never throw materials at one another.
Students should keep their heads up when running in the playing area.
